Basti — The Sacred Warm Oil Retention Therapy
Basti is one of Ayurveda’s most therapeutic treatments, traditionally used to nourish and realign the deeper tissues of the body.
It involves placing a warm, dough ring on a specific area — such as the lower back (Kati Basti), knees (Janu Basti), or abdomen — and filling it with herbalized oil to penetrate and heal the underlying tissues.
This localized therapy reduces pain, stiffness, inflammation, and supports the movement of Vata in the body.
It also enhances lubrication in joints, tones muscles, and strengthens the spine.
It may be part of a larger detoxification program (such as Panchakarma) or offered as a stand-alone wellness therapy.
A deeply restorative ritual that melts tension, warms the body,
and invites lasting comfort and stability.
What happens in a session
Nourishes and hydrates the skin; improves skin texture and tone.
Helps balance doshas — especially Vata and Kapha — providing calmness and grounding.
Improves circulation, lymphatic flow, removal of toxins and improves mobility in joints and muscles.
Promotes better sleep, lowers stress, supports relaxation of body and mind.
People feeling stressed, with dry or depleted skin, imbalanced nervous system.
Those seeking full-body rejuvenation, grounding, more vitality.
Great wellness ritual rather than purely therapeutic (though it has therapeutic value).
Not ideal when someone has acute fever/infection, skin open wounds, very high heat/stage of Pitta aggravation (consult therapist).
Should always use high-quality oils chosen for the individual (important for safety and effectiveness).
